bullet1 CALCULATING FORCES OF MOTION

bullet2 Solving One Step Division Problems

In science, when you are using the formulas for speed and velocity ( speed = distance / time ) or for acceleration ( acceleration = (final velocity – initial velocity) / time ) you will solve these equations the same way you would in math class.

bullet3 Division

x/a = b
To solve division equations you have to multiply both sides of the equation by the number you are dividing the variable by.

  • Positive Integer Example
    x/17 = 14

    Solve:  Multiply both sides of the equation by 17.
                  17(x/17) = 17(14)

    Solution:  Since 17/17 is 1 you have 1x, which is writen as just x,
                                on the right handside of the =.
                        And 17(14) = 238 you have 238
                                 on the left hand side of the =.
                         x = 238

    Check:  Substitute 238 in for x in the original equation x/17 = 14
                   238/17 = 14 and 14 = 14 so 238
                            is the answer to the equation.

  • Negative Decimal Example
    x/-23.57 = 81.93

    Solve:  Multiply both sides of the equation by -23.57.
                   -23.57(x/-23.57) = -23.57(81.93)

    Solution:  Since -23.57/-23.57 is 1 you have 1x,
                                which is writen as just x,
                                on the right handside of the =.
                       And -23.57(81.93)  you have -1931.0901
                                on the left hand side of the =.
                       x = -1931.0901

    Check:  Substitute -1931.0901 in for x in the original equation
                        x/-23.57 = 81.93
                  -1931.0901/-23.57 = 81.93 and 81.93 = 81.93
                          so -1931.0901 is the answer to the equation.

  • Fraction Example
    x 4/5 = 9/16

    Solve:  Multiply both sides of the equation by 4/5.
                4/5 (x 4/5)  = (4/5)(9/16)

    Solution:  Since anything divided by itself  is 1 ,
                              including 4/5 4/5
                              you have 1x,  which is writen as just x,
                              on the right handside of the =.
                       And  (4/5)(9/16) you have 9/20
                               on the left hand side of the =.
                       x = 9/20

    Check:  Substitute 9/20 in for x in the original equation
                          x 4/5 = 9/16
                   9/20 4/5 = 9/16 and  9/16 = 9/16
                          so 9/20 is the answer to the equation.
