bullet1 SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

bullet2 Using the OGT Calculator for Scientific Notation

  • You will be provided a calculator to use on the Ohio Graduation Test "OGT" to perform calculations; this will only help you if you know how to use the calculator.

  • Since different types of calculators work a little differently, work through these sections to help familiarize yourself with the calculator you will be using on the OGT test.

bullet3 Changing Decimals to Scientific Notation

This is an inverse function on the calculator so you will use the     key located in the top row, the second key from the left; and the science [ SCI ] key which is over the    decimal point key located on the bottom row, second key from the left.

  • Positive Example
    Change 9853.4215 to scientific notation.

    Key strokes:

    Display:   9.8534215 03

    Answer:   9.8534215 x 103

  • Negative Exponent Example
    Change 0.02853 to scientific notation.

    Key Strokes:

    Display:  2.853 –02

    Answer: 2.853 x 10-2

  • Negative Number Example
To input a negative number key in the number then the  key located on the bottom row the third key from the left.

    Change –78 to scientific notation.

    Key Strokes:

    Display:   -7.8 01

    Answer: -7.8 x 10

bullet3 To change scientific notation to decimals.

You will need to use the exponent  key, located on the fourth row the first key on the left,
to key in numbers in scientific notation.

( Warning:   The calculator will only hold 10 digits, the decimal point doesn’t count,
so if your answer is larger than that it will remain in scientific notion.)

  • Positive Decimal and Exponent Example
    Change 1.67 x 104 to decimal form.

    Key Strokes:

    Display:  16700

    Answer: 16700

  • Negative Exponent Example
To input a negative number key in the number then the  key located on the bottom row the third key from the left.

    Change 4.895 x 10-5  to a decimal.

    Key Strokes:

    Display:  0.0004895

    Answer:  0.0004895

  • Overflow Example
    Change 1.295 x 1012

    Key Strokes:

    Display: 1.29512

Answer: The calculator does not have enough room to display the answer as a decimal, so move
the decimal point 12 places to the left.    1295000000000
