That's phenomenal!

So you’ve been in philosophy class long enough to realize that phenomenology has nothing to do with the study of ESP, crop circles or other phenomenon like that. But ethical personalism? Transcendental objectivity? The hermeneutic structure of resoluteness? What does it all mean?

Okay, nobody said it would be easy but here's something that might help. This series of books will give you an overview of major philosophers and their beliefs.

Based on a true story?

The recent release of the movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose has raised questions about movies that are based on real-life events. How factual are they? How much of the true story is sacrificed to keep the film at a reasonable length – or punch up the story? You might be surprised that some of the movies you thought were factual are somewhat shady. Here are some books that you’ll find interesting:

History Goes to the Movies: A Viewer's Guide to the Best (and Some of the Worst) Historical Films Ever Made - Joseph Roquemore - PN1995.9 H5 R67 1999
This book examines the movies Spartacus and Dances with Wolves among others. The author takes Oliver Stone, director of the movie JFK, to task for littering it with so many factual errors that it "makes Cinderella look like a BBC documentary." Not to be missed.

Based on a true story (but with more car crashes): fact and fantasy in 100 favorite movies - Jonathan Vankin and John Whalen - PN1995.9.H5 V36 2005
The subtitle, But with more car crashes, refers to the movie The French Connection. The true story behind the movie was tense and gripping but not visually exciting. So the movie was loaded with car chases and crashes for suspense. A fun look at some of the best and the worst examples of "true" stories.

Past imperfect : history according to the movies - Mark C. Carnes, editor - PN 1995.9.H5 P3
This book is a series of essays about historical movies written by famous authors and historians as well as media critics. Some of the movies featured include Gone with the Wind, Mutiny on the Bounty, A Man for All Seasons, and Patton.

Going to see The Exorcism of Emily Rose this weekend?

Here are some movie reviews and other information about exorcism in the JPII Library:

Books about exorcism at the library:
An exorcist tells his story / Gabriele Amorth - BX2340 .A4713 1999
Fr. Gabriele Amorth, the renowned exorcist of Rome, tells of his many experiences in his ministry as an exorcist doing battle with Satan. In this book, the reader is able to witness the activities of the exorcist, to experience what an exorcist sees and does.

The library also has Fr. Amorth’s follow-up book:
An exorcist-- more stories / Gabriele Amorth - BX2340 .A4714 2002

Hostage to the devil : the possession and exorcism of five living Americans/ Malachi Martin. BX2340 .M35
This book was published in 1976 by one of the more famous exorcists of the last century.

Possessed: the true story of an exorcism - BX2340 .A44
This is the case that inspired William Peter Blatty to write his book, The Exorcist. In 1949 a family asked a team of Jesuit priests to perform an exorcism on their teenaged son. The author based this book on a secret diary of one of the exorcists and personal interviews with another. A review of this book by Library Journal states that the author’s "account is horrific, and he will succeed in forcing even highly skeptical, worldly readers into doubting their preconceived ideas about the "medieval" notion of demonic possession."

And of course, there’s the granddaddy of them all:
William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist. PZ4 .B65 Ex 2

Interview with an Exorcist – (New addition to JPII Library) -BX2340 I68
St. Joseph Communications presents an interview with Fr. Jose Antonio Fortea, expert in the history and practice of exorcism. While conducting research for his doctorate, Fr. Fortea was given unrestricted access to many secret and sealed documents. He has also consulted with exorcists, investigated cases of alleged demonic possession and witnessed countless exorcisms firsthand.

Please remember – exorcism is not a job for amateurs!

"In Christian countries authentic cases of possession sometimes occur and every priest, especially if he be a parish priest, or pastor, is liable to be called upon to perform his duty as exorcist. In doing so, he is to be mindful of the prescriptions of the Roman Ritual and of the laws of provincial or diocesan synods, which for most part require that the bishop should be consulted and his authorization obtained before exorcism is attempted. The chief points of importance in the instructions of the Roman Ritual, prefixed to the rite itself, are as follows:
  • "Possession is not lightly to be taken for granted. Each case is to be carefully examined and great caution to be used in distinguishing genuine possession from certain forms of disease.
  • "The priest who undertakes the office should be himself a holy man, of a blameless life, intelligent, courageous, humble, and he should prepare for the work by special acts of devotion and mortification, particularly by prayer and a fasting (Matthew 17:20)." (emphasis added).

Searching for Journals?

Over the summer the library added a new search engine to our web site. This search engine allows students to search for journals by title. If you know the name of the journal that you need, simply click on the "Title of Journal" link on the library main page. This will take you to the search screen. The search engine will tell you which database has the journal you need and give you a direct link to it. It can also tell you if the library doesn’t have the journal you’re looking for.

If you need an article from a journal that we don’t have online, check the JPII Library catalog first to see if we have it in print. If it’s unavailable at the JPII, you can order it ILL here: Place an ILL request online
